With all the hype about the environment lately it has left me with one lingering afterthought. Will the shoe industry go Green? Greenwashing is the act of companies changing their ways to use more eco friendly materials and practices, and then advertising that they are now a “Green” company. So these days it is a very popular, and profitable, act to Green up your industry. So when will the shoe companies jump on board? If I were Nike, Puma, or especially converse I would look into stylish yet economic ways to Green up the shoe industry. Lets face it, our most admired Kicks are made from plastics and rubbers that aren’t necessarily good for the planet. Now I am no hippy, but I know that this will happen sooner then later.
Shoe industry! Don’t screw this up!
It will be pretty easy for these companies to jump head first into the whole green thing without thinking about what the customer really wants. This will leave us with horrendously ugly shoes that will split the market. Soon there will be the “Green” shoe section next to lifestyle which will be filled with hippy-esque shoes. Unless they do it right and slowly integrate Green elements in the shoe making process. Then finally changing materials slowly and one at a time. But this probably won’t happen. Lets hope I am wrong, if so drinks are on me!
